Judith brings us a book of short stories in three parts.
Part One, Welsh Cakes, has nine stories about a Welsh girl named Gwen. The stories are poignant with an underlying hint of sadness. They take us from the time she is six years old, through the heartbreaking sickness of her mother, and into her adulthood, when she enters a convent.
Part Two consists of eight short stories with themes varying from romance to attempted murder, with protagonists both old and young in age, some male and some female.
Part Three has twenty-four postcard and short-short stories, which bring the reader into the centre of each tale quickly and to endings that are often surprising.
This is a great book for anyone who likes to while away an hour or two with a good read, and makes an excellent gift for a relative, friend or oneself.
Excerpt from a story from Part Three of Welsh Cakes:
The Picnic Table
I ask for a table by the window. No matter that it’s an overcast day in February; I want to see the lake. Through the grey-white opacity of winter-ice rises an abandoned picnic table. It awaits a fresh coat of paint; something to give it value, something to say it’s wanted, needed.
I smile at the waiter as he serves my lunch. A winter-soup, that’s thick enough and hot enough to keep out the cold, though not the bleak thoughts of my empty apartment in the city. The steam rises from the bowl to my lips and nose; its spicy taste startles my tongue as I sip.
The waiter hovers to hear my verdict.
“Good, very good,” I say.
“Ice storm in the forecast,” he says.
This information is given in a voice full of good cheer and triumph.
I say nothing.
I don’t want to leave this Muskoka resort. I want to stay here till summer. I want to watch the picnic table recover its four legs. I want to see it stand in its place at the lakeshore with firm resolution. I came here to dig up buried remembrances of the holiday taken with Paul last summer. The memories are still trapped, caught in the chill of Paul’s sudden departure from my life. I’m not ready to be alone. I’m like the picnic table—unsteady, off balance, uncertain of myself…
